Venter passes debut hurdle at the Island
Jonathan Venter has today achieved his best result in Formula Ford to date, following a somewhat unfortunate weekend at Winton in the opening event of the year, clinching 5th in race 1 today at Phillip Island.
After opening practice on Friday, whereby the overall balance of the car was improved to suit the fast flowing circuit, Jono today arrived at qualifying, achieving an acceptable 8th position, with a quickest lap time of 1:39.7166, in a session dominated by quick consistent times of all the top 10 competitors. Being 1.3 seconds off the pole lap time, further changes were made by the Anglo team to improve the setup on Venter’s car, which proved its worth, seeing him place in 5th in an overall shortened 5 lap journey around the 4.5km track.
There was one objective of his racing for this weekend that Jono has now successfully ticked off, after performing his first ‘true’ overtaking manoeuvre in a Formula Ford under race conditions, when he took a position from fellow competitor, Jake Fouracre, entering the turn 4 hairpin. “I was so proud of myself, yet I knew there was still a job ahead,” said Venter. This race also saw Jono achieve consistent lap times of 1min40secs, maintaining the speed of the top 5 all race.
Venter will now enter the second day of the meeting, with 7 and 10 lap races ahead of him. The team also intends to look at competing in selected rounds of the Australian Formula Ford Championship this year, and this experience is most certainly ideal.
